Buffalo Profile
Buffalo, New York is the state's second-largest city, after New York City, of course. Named the third cleanest city in America in 2005, it is also widely known as one of America’s friendliest cities. Buffalo is located on the eastern end of Lake Erie, opposite the mouth of the Niagara River, which flows north over Niagara Falls and empties into Lake Ontario. Though it gets its fair share of snow in the winter, Buffalo has dry, sunny summers, yet it still gets enough rain to maintain its lush, green landscape. One of the most notable characteristics of Buffalo is its scrumptious cuisine. Buffalo food has hints of Italian, German, Polish, Jewish, Greek and American flavors. Local favorites include Sahlen's hot dogs,, Wardynski's kielbasa, pierogi, sponge candy, and haddock fish fries and loganberry tea. It’s also the birthplace of Buffalo chicken wings, thanks to chef and owner of the Anchor Bar, Teressa Bellisimo. It’s also home to the kummelweck, a tasty, salty roll with caraway seeds. After a great meal, there’s no need to rush to grab a pint. Last call isn’t until 4 a.m., unlike the o’clock rule in most U.S. cities. For art appreciaters, Buffalo has many private and public art galleries. One of the most revered is the Albright-Knox Art Gallery, home to one of the world’s best collections of Modern art. There’s also Burchfield-Penney Art Center, Hallwalls Contemporary Arts Center, and numerous galleries and studios. Live performances at Shea’s Performing Arts Center’s old-style theater is another wise choice for entertainment. Other points of interest include Buffalo and Erie County Botanical Gardens, the Buffalo and Erie County Historical Society, the Erie Canal, the USS Little Rock, Forest Lawn Cemetery, the Mark Twain Room where you’ll find the original Huckleberry Finn manuscript, McKinley Monument, Erie County Naval & Military Park, and of course, nearby Niagara Falls.
